I ran my first long distance race yesterday in LA. The
Nike+ Human Race is a worldwide 10K (6.2 miles). Run in 25 different cities around the world from Amsterdam to Vancouver, It is supposedly the largest single day race event in history. Proceeds from the event were donated to either
ninemillion.org,
livestrong.org, or the
wwf.org (that's World Wildlife Fund for those not in the know).
Originally I had never intended to sign up for an event like this, but I had been running in the mornings the last couple of months anywhere from 3-5 miles, twice a week. And then my friend Sophia told me about this 10K she was considering doing and I thought, what the hell, sure. Throw in the fact, at the end of the race we see Kanye West and Common perform, all the better.
The race begins at a central lawn at the LA Memorial Sports complex where people are supposed to organize themselves by how fast they are. Sub-7 minute milers are up front, 12+ milers are in the back. I positioned myself around the 9 minute mile mark but then noticed there were some very unfit looking people around me and so I decided to move myself further up. I wasn't sure if this was a good idea, but whatever, I'm not getting out-run by some fatties. This actually turned out to be a great thing as when the race started I had to dodge less people. I somehow ended up just near the sub-7 miler mark. Now, these guys/gals were fit. When the race started, everyone ahead of me just took off in a near sprint. Insane. The people around me were running at a pretty fast clip. Much faster than I usually do on my runs, but I kept up with the flow pretty well. It's a thrilling feeling running with this many people, it's easy to see why or how you can get caught up in the moment and just start running at some ridiculous pace. Clearly, I should not have been running at that pace as should a lot of people around me by the looks of them. I guess it evens out in the end, but afterwords, looking at my time I was doing a 7'40" mile for the first 1.5 miles or so. Way too fast as I petered out in the end. Around mile 5, or the 8K mark, you hit a mental block and your body definitely begins to start asking questions like, "when are you going to stop? because this is ridiculous ... seriously, you should stop ... stop" Towards the end I sprinted in and finished with a respectable time of 52'12". It equates to an average of an 8'24" mile. Not bad. I finished in 39,693rd place in the world and 1,452nd place in LA. I probably should have started out slower and then built up to a faster pace, but I guess that's for next time.

End of the race, Kanye performed and I have to say he was badass. High energy, very entertaining and sounded great. Overall one of the more productive nights in recent memory: donated money to a good cause, ran 10K, saw Kanye perform live, hung out with friends, saw fireworks .. great day.
